Right here in Livingston County, where agriculture is the number one industry Genesee Valley Farm Discovery Center and the Livingston County Agricultural Society & Fair in Caledonia teamed up with their similar missions to teach children and others about agriculture. The three-day event offers second, third and fourth graders a chance to get out of the classroom and talk to actual farmers about what they do and how they do it. Students at least get an introduction to what crops are grown, how they grow, animals and what they eat, how big they are, what products we get from cows and sheep. Last years Farm Discovery Days had five stations dedicated to specific topics within the agriculture industry: cows and sheep; greenhouses and plants; bees and honey; corn and integrated pest management and agricultural technology that centered on the expanding role of aerial drones in agriculture. Before they started hitting the stations, students were instructed to use all of their senses to observe and describe their experiences throughout the day. Then once they visited all of the different stations, students used their recorded observations to craft a haiku. The kids were then asked to volunteer to read their poems in front of the audience. This will be our third year and we hope to see it grow larger every year.
